Cultivating a Culturally Competent Child with the Help of Movies

February is Black History Month and our friends at Common Sense media have developed a list of black history movies that highlight the importance of diversity, acceptance and race.

The following movies offer jumping off points for conversations surrounding prejudice. Through watching these films, we learn to celebrate diversity and become more culturally competent and aware of issues surrounding race. Whatever your family's racial background, you can use movies like the ones below to begin or continue conversations about race. Movies can help underline key messages like the importance of diversity and acceptance.

They can also be opportunities to discuss how different racial groups are depicted in film. The titles below each deal with African American characters and encounters with prejudice or racial issues, which makes them great conversation starters.
